Frequently Asked Questions

Counselling

My standard fee for individuals is £50 per session

I will travel to your address or I have a summerhouse which has comfortable seating and is an informal and private place for you to talk freely.

Some people need only one session, others may need counselling or hypnotherapy for many months. It always depends on the individual and we’ll discuss this at your first session. It’s important to have an end goal in sight so I usually offer a course of six sessions, with a progress review at the end. At this point, we can decide together whether to end there or continue your therapy. Your counselling will never be ended abruptly.

The first session is an informal assessment. I’ll talk you through my policies regarding confidentiality, ethics, bookings/cancellations and payment to ensure we have safe boundaries with which to work. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss what’s led you to seek counselling, ask questions and raise any points that you’re still unclear on.

It’s important you choose a counsellor who suits your needs, someone you feel you can trust. I’ll know by now if I’ll be able to help you. And, of course, you don’t have to decide immediately, you may want time to go away and think about it.

I usually recommend weekly sessions; however, fortnightly can also be effective if your work or family commitments don’t allow for a weekly session.

Counselling is usually short term and looks at current issues that may be causing you concern. Psychotherapy is usually a longer process that works at a deeper, emotional level. It can help you to come to terms with the past and identify any unhelpful behaviours that may be affecting you now.

Hypnotherapy

I will treat you as I would like to be treated myself, as a unique individual respecting diversity around issues of age, gender, sexual identity, disability and/or race.

This will depend upon your individual circumstances. This is something that we discuss with when we first meet and we agree a set number of sessions with you which we will review with you. Depending on the issues you want to address hypnotherapy can often be a relatively short process.

It is possible that you will feel quite apprehensive about meeting your myself for the first time – I will understand this and do my best to put you at ease. At the first session i will tell you all about the practical information you need to know and of course you will be able to tell me about your own goals for attending therapy.

I am skilled at helping people to relax and there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way for you to behave. Try not to worry about things like this as this may make you feel less relaxed. This is something you will be led into gently – and I will be aware of your apprehensions.

The state of relaxation that you enter is not the same as sleeping – but some people do fall asleep and this is nothing to worry about. You will be in a secure environment and your therapist will be aware of this possibility. I will also explain about the method that they will use to ensure you are fully aware and ready to get on with your usual activities after the session.  Oh and you always do wakeup

When you meet with your me for the first time tell me about any concerns that you may have and I will be able to reassure you. Unfortunately, the only thing that many people know about hypnosis is what they have seen of so called ‘stage hypnosis’ where people may indeed be encouraged to do ‘silly’ things for the entertainment of an audience. Hypnotherapy is nothing like this –I am an ethical practitioner and everything that happens during your therapy is completely confidential.

Anyone over the age of 18 years can choose to see a therapist.

By using one of the National Hypnotherapy Society members or National Counselling Society members as I am, and you can verify this on their websites, you have the security of knowing that they have been verified by the Society. This means that we have checked their qualifications and experience, they have insurance, and they are governed by the Society’s Code of Ethics.

You may see a Hypnotherapist in all sorts of different settings. It may be in the offices of a charity, in a private consulting room or in an NHS setting. Some private therapists also work from home. The important thing is that you will meet in a quiet and private room where there will be no interruptions.

Yes it is important that you can feel that you can talk about things in complete confidence. I will not talk about you with others – the only time they might breach confidentiality is if by keeping a confidence it could cause significant harm to you, your therapist or another person – for example if your life is at risk. I will explain about this when you first meet.

When we first meet I will ask you about any pre-existing medical conditions that you may have and also if you are taking any prescribed medication.
